Super Eights: India bat against Australia in World Twenty20

COLOMBO: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat against Australia in a group two Super Eights match of the World Twenty20 in Colombo on Friday.
In the same group, Pakistan beat South Africa by two wickets earlier in the day.

COLOMBO: Umar Gul turned an unlikely hero with the bat as Pakistan survived a middle-order collapse to beat South Africa by two wickets in the Super Eights of the World Twenty20 on Friday.
Pakistan, chasing South Africa's modest 133-6, crashed to 76-7 in the 15th over before Gul and Umar Akmal combined to share a match-winning partnership of 49 in 27 balls.
Gul smashed two fours and three sixes in his 32 off 17 balls before he was dismissed off the last ball of the 19th over by fast bowler Dale Steyn with nine more needed.
But Akmal, who remained unbeaten on 43, and Saeed Ajmal steered Pakistan home with two balls to spare, Ajmal edging the winning boundary off Morne Morkel.
Pakistan's openers raced to 24 in 2.5 overs before the innings fell apart after Imran Nazir (14) was caught behind off Steyn.
Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson, who came to bowl the fourth over, removed skipper Mohammad Hafeez with his second delivery and Nasir Jamshed with the six to make Pakistan 31-3.

West Indies enter next round in World T20

COLOMBO: The West Indies qualified for the Super Eights stage of the World Twenty20 after their Group B match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain on Monday.
Ireland made 129-6 in their 19 overs before heavy rain at the Premadasa stadium prevented the West Indies from starting their innings.
Both teams gained one point each, but the West Indies joined Group B winners Australia in the next round due to a superior net run-rate over the Irish.
The West Indies will be placed alongside defending champions England, New Zealand and hosts Sri Lanka in group one of the Super Eights which starts on Thursday.
The other half has Australia, South Africa, India and either Pakistan or Bangladesh, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
The match, watched by barely 1,000 fans, was reduced to 19 overs per side after an hour's interruption midway through Ireland's innings due to rain.
Chris Gayle turned star performer with the ball with two wickets as the Ireland innings failed to gain any momentum after the West Indies won the toss and elected to field.
Niall O'Brien made 25 and Gary Wilson scored 21, before both batsmen fell to Gayle's off-spin.
Irish captain William Porterfield was dismissed off the first ball of the match for the second time in a row, bowled by Fidel Edwards.

No ICC award for Pakistan this year

COLOMBO: Pakistan’s T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez and international umpire Aleem Dar, could not win the ICC awards this year, at a ceremony held in Colombo on Saturday..

They were the only Pakistanis nominated for the awards of the Spirit of the Year and the Umpire of the Year, respectively.

Instead, New Zealand left-arm spinner,Daniel Vettori won the ICC Spirit of Cricket award while the David Shepherd trophy for the Umpire of the Year went to Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena..

The New Zealand left-arm spinner won the Spirit of Cricket award, for a sporting gesture during a Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo last November.

The match was heading to a tight finish, when Vettori accidentally collided with the non-striker Malcolm Waller during his follow-through. The clash hindered Waller from taking a single, and by that time the striker Regis Chakabva was too far down the track to get back. Though the wicketkeeper Reece Young took off the bails, Vettori immediately indicated that he had blocked Waller, and New Zealand decided to not appeal for Chakbva's wicket.

Vettori’s gesture earned him the award ahead of Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez and the South African pair of Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers. MS Dhoni had taken the award last year, for recalling Ian Bell after a controversial run-out during the Trent Bridge Test.

Dharmasena won the umpire of the year award for the first time. The other nominees were five-time winner Simon Taufel, three-time winner Aleem Dar, along with New Zealand's Billy Bowden, England's Richard Kettleborough and Australia's Rodney Tucker.
